This six week online course is designed to improve your knowledge and skills in interpreting blood smears and cytological specimens frequently seen in small animal practice. Participants will develop a logical approach to interpretation of peripheral blood smears and cytological samples through a case-based approach.
Problems addressed will include erythrocyte, leukocyte and thrombocyte changes, common and/or characteristic skin (dermal and subcutaneous) masses, lymph nodes, and internal organs or cavities commonly aspirated. It is suitable for all clinicians in small animal practice who wish to improve their approach and their skills in interpreting blood smears and cytological preparations. It would also be useful CPD for veterinarians preparing for RCVS CertAVP C module C-VP.2 (Clinical pathology - laboratory diagnostics). Participants can earn up to 36 CPD hours if the course is completed in full.
Each participant will receive the comprehensive illustrated haematology and cytology manuals free of charge from Nestlé Purina.

• Staining optimization and microscope care
• Interpretation of peripheral blood smears in anaemia and inflammation
• Understanding the limitation of hematology analysers in the face of blood smear examination
• Systematic approach to common and/or characteristic skin mass and lymph node aspirates
• Examples of common organ and cavity aspirates/lesions
• Learning about optimizing the communication with pathologists
