This course is most suitable for veterinarians who wish to advance their knowledge and skills in abdominal ultrasonography but who may not be able to attend practical scanning days at the RVC. The course will include web-based online recorded lectures, movies demonstrating ultrasound techniques, and access to the tutor and other participants via an asynchronous online discussion board. No special software is required.

The online lecture component is worth 20 CPD hours, the online discussion component worth up to 6 CPD hours (dependent on level of participation) and will be followed by an optional practical session (6 CPD hours) on Wednesday 30th May at the RVC (limited to 20 participants) at the RVC to consolidate knowledge.

The online lectures run from Monday 16th April to Sunday 27th May.

The course is designed to provide veterinary surgeons with the knowledge and skills required to perform a basic abdominal ultrasonographic examination, identify normal anatomy and changes seen with common diseases. It is a course for beginners. No previous knowledge of ultrasound or experience with ultrasonographic examinations is required or expected.

Key areas:

• Physics of diagnostic ultrasound
• Ultrasonographic artefact
• Machine set-up and image recording
• Review of normal ultrasonographic appearance
• Ultrasonography of liver, biliary tract and spleen, gastrointestinal tract and pancreas, urinary tract, reproductive tract, adrenal glands, lymph nodes and abdomen in general
• Ultrasound guided invasive procedures

During the optional practical day the participants will have the opportunity to practice examining the abdominal organs taught during the online component of the course. This optional day will be held at the RVC\'s Hawkshead Campus on Wednesday 30th May at an additional cost of £249.

15.00 - 15.30 Tea/coffee break
15.30 - 16.30 Adrenals and sublumbar lymph nodes
16.30 - 17.00 US-guided biopsies
