This one-day dentistry course will look at the nurses’ role in small animal dentistry and how to bring this important subject to the forefront in practice. This lecture will cover periodontal disease, oral and dental examination as well as dental instruments and their maintenance. It will also cover dental clinics giving delegates the confidence to establish these effectively in their practices.
Topics to be covered include:-
Understand and identify normal dentition in the dog and cat
Understand how to perform a thorough oral and dental examination
Be able to create and interpret a completed dental chart
Understand the pathogenesis of periodontal disease, and perform safe and effective treatments (including scaling, polishing, subgingival debridement)
Be able to identify and provide correct maintenance for a variety of dental instruments
Be able to set up effective dental clinics and make recommendations on effective homecare

The Speakers
Rachel Perry<br /> BSc BVM&S<br /> MANZCVS (Small Animal Dentistry & Oral Surgery)<br /> Dip.EVDC, MRCVS, European Veterinary Specialist, Veterinary Dentistry<br /> Rachel graduated as a veterinary surgeon from Edinburgh University in 1997, and entered small animal practice. She soon developed an interest in small animal dentistry. Since 2010 her practice has been limited to small animal dentistry and oral surgery, and she provides first opinion and referral services in Sussex.<br /> <br /> In 2012 she became a member of the Australian and New Zealand College of Veterinary Scientists by examination in the subject of small animal dentistry and oral surgery. She was Course Organiser for the BVDA from 2008-2014 and has lectured nationally and internationally. She has published original research and review articles in journals, textbooks and is regularly involved in on-line and in-house teaching for veterinary nurses and vets across the country. She has a particular interest in client communication skills.<br /> <br /> In 2015 she became the first RCVS Advanced Practitioner in veterinary dentistry and in 2016 passed the European Veterinary Dental College board examinations, becoming a European Veterinary Specialist in Veterinary Dentistry. In her spare time she competes in and coaches triathlon.
