This six week online course is suitable for new and recent graduates, as well as those looking to further advance their diagnostic skills and therapeutic options with respect to equine medicine. Each week will focus on a topic which poses a significant challenge to those in first opinion equine veterinary practice allowing practitioners to develop a rational and logical approach to these cases.
Participants will also improve their skills in assessing clinical pathology and critically reviewing clinical data in relation to equine medicine. Course materials are a combination of course notes, case assessments and discussion forums in which participants review cases and discuss cases with their colleagues. Participants can earn up to 36 CPD hours if the course is fully completed.
Fundamentals of Equine Medicine: A Survival Guide for Equine Practice
Week 1:
General Introduction
Using a problem oriented approach in practice.
Week 2:
‘Beyond TMPS, Ventipulmin and Bute….What to do when the horse doesn’t respond!’
How to make evidence based therapeutic decisions in practice.
Week 3:
‘Fat ponies with sore feet’
Diagnosing and dealing with laminitis, EMS and PPID
Week 4:
‘Dealing with a ‘contagious yard’: How to avoid becoming the most unpopular vet in Britain!’
How to manage an infectious disease outbreak on a yard
Week 5:
‘An eye for an eye - equine ocular problems’
Diagnosing and treating the common and not so common diseases. How to interpret the pre-purchase ocular exam
Week 6:
‘The flat foal - diagnosis and management’
Resuscitation of the compromised foal. Deciding whether or not to refer. Practical treatment on the farm.
