This course is designed as an introduction to working with camelids. It includes a review of their unique anatomy and physiology and tips on how best to approach evaluation of camelids in the field.
A session on camelid herd health will cover the influences on herd health as well as important features for inclusion in camelid herd health plans. You will learn about the key diseases affecting camelids and how to identify them in practice.
Procedures that general practitioners may perform routinely in the field will be discussed, including how to take blood samples, how to place intravenous catheters, castration and dental care as well as field anaesthesia protocols.
Venipuncture techniques will be reinforced with a practical session using a venipuncture model designed by the speaker to give delegates confidence in performing these procedures in the field.
There will be another practical on handling camelids to facilitate familiarisation with camelid behaviour and the normal physical examination.
The five key things delegates will learn from this course are:
- Main anatomical and physiological differences of camelids compared with other domestic species
- Main medical problems experienced by camelids in the UK
- Appropriate pharmacological dosages for camelids (all used off-label in these species)
- How to handle camelids appropriately
- How to blood sample alpacas and place IV catheters
Who is it for?
Vets who are new to working with camelids, have limited experience with the species or require a refresher course.
