Initial stabilisation of trauma patients is often difficult and stressful for all concerned. This
course will look at the triage, initial assessment and stablilisation of patients; which can help to reduce morbidity and give you confidence in dealing with traumatic injuries. The course will look at the nursing care involved with trauma patients, including initial management of bite wounds, road traffic accidents and neurological injury. The course will review analgesia, fluid therapy,
diagnostics and therapeutic interventions as well as commonly performed procedures for trauma
patients, including the placement of feeding tubes, thoracostomy tubes etc.
Specific areas to be covered
· Initial patient triage and major body system assessment
· Recognition of shock and appropriate fluid therapy
· Nursing the thoracic trauma patient
· Nursing the abdominal trauma patient
· Nursing the head trauma patient
· Long term nursing techniques including tube and drain placement and management.
