Wound management is a role increasingly carried out by veterinary nurses within the practice setting. In order to carry out this role effectively and efficiently, a good understanding of the processes involved in wound healing and skills in assessing the type of wounds which present, and complications that may be associated with them are needed. Additionally a good knowledge of the types of wound dressings available on the market, and the types of wounds they are most suited to are needed. Infection control is also a consideration in wound management, as well as many aspects of veterinary practice, this series reviews the basics of infection control, how things can be improved and the relevance of multidrug resistant infections. It will also give nurses more confidence in these areas as well as giving them a sound understanding of the reasons why wounds may fail to heal ’normally’ and what we can do to get them ’back on track’.
Topics covered include:
-A revision of the natural healing process and the basics of infection control
-Preparing a wound to promote healing
-Dressings- which ones, how and when
