The Speakers

Dr Joanna Murrell, BVSc PhD CertVA DipECVA MRCVS
Senior Lecturer in Veterinary Anaesthesia

Jo graduated from Bristol in 1994 and after working in the department as a clinical fellow in anaesthesia she undertook a PhD at Bristol investigating neurophysiological correlates of pain in horses. In 2001 she moved to University Utrecht as head of small animal anaesthesia and then had the opportunity to spend 2 years in New Zealand carrying out research between 2005 and 2007. In March 2007 she returned to Bristol where she contributes to the provision of clinical anaesthesia but also has a large research role, heading the anaesthesia and analgesia research group at Langford and collaborating with neuroscience research in the department of physiology and pharmacology. She is a Diplomate of the European College of Veterinary Anaesthesia and Analgesia and her research interests focus on clinical pain management and increasing understanding of the fundamental mechanisms of pain perception.
Paul Macfarlane, BVSc CertVA DipECVA MRCVS
Clinical Anaesthetist

After qualifying from Bristol in 2000 Paul worked in mixed, large and small animal practice until 2007 when he started a residency in Veterinary Anaesthesia and Critical Care at the University of Liverpool. He gained the RCVS Certificate in Veterinary Anaesthesia in 2007 and the Diploma of the European College of Veterinary Anaesthesia and Analgesia in 2010. He enjoys all aspects of Veterinary Anaesthesia, even those that happen very early in the morning. His current research interests include the impact of CPAP on horses respiratory and cardiovascular systems, minimizing heat loss in small animal surgery and Clinical Audit in Veterinary Anaesthesia.
