Date: Saturday 18th November, 2017 - Sunday 19th November, 2017
Start time: 8:30 AM - 6:00 PM
Duration: 2 hour(s)
Cost: £904

This two-day course is designed to provide small animal clinicians with the theory and practical skills to confidently manage common surgical emergencies seen in practice. The course starts by using real life clinical cases to discuss the diagnosis and management of common surgical emergencies. A ‘hands-on’ practical session on the second day will enable attendees to practice essential emergency surgery techniques on cadavers in a relaxed learning environment. The practical sessions will provide attendees with a unique opportunity to develop skills in emergency surgery, which are otherwise rarely offered.

On the first day the following topics will be covered in lecture format using real life clinical case examples:

An approach to the acute abdomen
Oesophageal and intestinal foreign bodies
Methods of enteral nutrition
GDV and pexy techniques
Management of urinary tract obstructions
When and how to place a thoracic drain
Discussions will be encouraged during the dedicated question times, with speakers sharing their successes and failures in order to maximise the learning experience for all attending veterinarians. Day 1 will conclude with an optional course dinner, which will give attendees the opportunity to get to know each other and to spend more time with the speakers.

On the second day, with intermittent pre wet lab lectures explaining the procedures, the 5½-hour practical session will give attendees the opportunity to put theory into practice on cadaver specimens and to ask questions all under the supervision of the course tutors. The following topics will be covered during the practical sessions:

Thoracocentesis and the placement of thoracic drains
Tracheostomy tube placement
Placement of nasoesophageal and oesophagostomy tubes
Techniques for enterotomy and enterectomy
Methods of cystotomy and perineal urethrostomy
The course fee includes lunches at a restaurant, coffee/tea breaks, extensive electronic course notes and a certificate of attendance. On the evening of the first day, all attendees are invited to attend the course dinner, which costs 55 CHF (not included in the course fee; drinks will be charged extra). Early course registration is recommended as there are only a limited number of places available.
