This two-day cadaver-based practical course will provide the delegate with an introduction to surgery of the thorax, larynx, trachea and upper airways. Day one will start with a short lecture based introduction to common surgical conditions of the upper respiratory tract including the trachea and larynx before moving onto a hands on practical session giving delegates the chance to practice the surgical techniques needed to successfully treat these conditions.
Day two will focus on thoracic surgery, including the diaphragm. Covering the approach to chest surgery, as well as closure techniques, lung biopsies and lobectomies and dealing with chest wall trauma and diaphragmatic hernias.
Topics to be covered include:
Day 1
BAOS corrective surgeries – aplasty, palatoplasty, latyngeal sacculectomy
Laryngeal surgery including arytenoid lateralisation
Tracheal surgery – temporary tracheostomy, permanent tracheostomy, tracheal resections
Day 2
Median sternotomy
Lung biopsies & lung lobectomies
Intercostal thoracotomy
Pericardial window & subtotal pericardiectomy
Chest wall resection & reconstruction
Repairing diaphragmatic hernias
