This two-day practical course is designed to provide small animal clinicians with the theory and practical skills to confidently manage common surgical emergencies seen in practice. The course starts by using real life clinical cases to discuss the diagnosis and management of common surgical emergencies. The 5½ hours of ‘hands-on’ practical session on the second day will enable delegates to practice the following essential emergency surgery techniques on cadavers in a relaxed learning environment: thoracocentesis and the placement of thoracic drains, tracheostomy tube placement, placement of nasoesophageal and oesophagostomy tubes, techniques for enterotomy and enterectomy , methods of cystotomy and perineal urethrostomy. These sessions will provide delegates with a unique opportunity to develop skills in emergency surgery, which are otherwise rarely offered.
