The acute abdomen case is by its nature a clinical challenge, and despite advances in in-house diagnostic testing and imaging it can be all too easy to reach for the scalpel! However, this course will show how a more measured approach will lead to better outcomes for the patient and reduce the incidence of negative findings on abdominal exploration.
Using a problem orientated and case-based approach delegates will be guided through the initial examination and investigations appropriate for these cases. Stabilisation of the patient prior to ongoing medical therapy or surgical interventions will be highlighted. Treatment of the common medical diseases that can present with an acute abdomen e.g., pancreatitis will be discussed and a practical approach to abdominal surgery will be taught. The initial ongoing support that these patients require will also be introduced.
