Cranial cruciate ligament degeneration and rupture are recognised as one of the major causes of chronic and acute hind limb lameness in dogs presented to veterinary practitioners. Over the years many different surgical repair techniques have been utilised, but in recent times, treatment with tibial osteotomy surgical techniques seem to offer some advantages in terms of resolution of lameness and improved outcome. Tibial tuberosity advancement (TTA) has become one of the preferred techniques used in orthopaedic practice for the treatment of cranial cruciate ligament disease. However, complications are not uncommon though technical mistakes can be easily avoided when important principles are understood.

The goal of this one day workshop is for practicing veterinarians (including RCVS CertAVP candidates enrolled on module C-SAS.7) to successfully plan and execute a TTA surgery. The morning of the workshop will initially focus on the pathophysiology of cranial cruciate ligament disease and the theory that underpins TTA. The surgical technique of application of forked and forkless TTA will then be practiced in the afternoon laboratory session on plastic bone models. Following this there will be a cadaver laboratory to review the surgical anatomy and the surgical procedure to perform a TTA will be performed.
