This course is suitable for any veterinarian with an interest in poultry especially if they are considering studying for the Certificate of Advanced Veterinary Practice B module in Production Animal Practice (B-PAP.2) with an emphasis on poultry.
Week 1. The approach to common diseases in backyard chickens
Backyard chickens are commonly presented to vets in small and mixed animal practice. Many veterinary texts are aimed at commercial poultry vets with little guidance on the backyard flock. This week aims to give vets an overall guide as to how to approach many of the common presentations of ill health in pet chickens in general practice. The webinar this week will cover diagnosis and a practical approach to treatment including advice on antimicrobial selection. It will also discuss respiratory disease, digestive tract disorders, ectoparasites, disorders of the reproductive tract and Mareks Disease.
Weeks 2-4. Diseases of commercial poultry
This series of three webinars and associated online learning support is an introduction to poultry disease in commercial poultry and is ideal for recent graduates and those whom have recently started working with poultry. The three webinars will cover common diseases, differential diagnosis, disease prevention and treatment. The presenter will draw on his multinational experience as a poultry veterinarian and will promote a holistic approach to maintaining good health and welfare in commercial poultry.
This course last ran in June 2014 and contains all of the learning material (webinars, reading material, slides, self assessment exercises) from then, but is not tutor moderated. A set of FAQs is available which represent the questions and concerns previous participants have had and the tutor responses.
