Buckingham Palace Sir Peter O'Sullevan Buckingham Palace Sir Peter O'Sullevan. World Horse Welfare is delighted to have received a £50,000 donation from the Peter O’Sullevan Charitable Trust. Last Saturday (12 May) at Ascot we were one of six beneficiary charities to be presented with the £300,000 cheque. The Trust has raised over £3million since its foundation 16 years ago and in that time World Horse Welfare has received a staggering amount of around half a million pounds. Sir Peter has been a loyal supporter of our charity since the 1940s and has been a Vice-President for the past decade. He has had a close involvement in a number of key successes for the charity, including the start of our international training programme in the developing world in 1985, the numerous achievements of our long-running campaign to end the long distance transportation of horses for slaughter in Europe and our growth to become the largest equine rehoming charity in the UK. Chief Executive of World Horse Welfare, Roly Owers said: “We are extremely grateful to Sir Peter for his extraordinary support. We are very fortunate to have the passion, commitment and knowledge of a patron that stands alone for his record-breaking fundraising. “Possibly the greatest contribution the Trust has made over the years is to our transport campaign which aims to end the biggest single abuse of horses in Europe today. These horses suffer pain, injury, dehydration and exhaustion on these needlessly long journeys that can last for several days without adequate food, rest or even water. Thanks to the Trust our campaign has helped reduce the number of horses transported this way from 165,000 in 2001 to around 65,000 today. This is still 65,000 too many, but with the continued support of the Peter O'Sullevan Trust, we will strive to bring an end to this abhorrent trade by 2020.” World Horse Welfare receives no government funding so we rely on public donations to continue our vital work to help horses.
