A new section called 'Business', debuts on VetClick this evening, with a column called 'Outside In', written by Christian Bamber, which offers business advice and insight to busy veterinary practices. Christian Bamber Christian Bamber MA (Cantab), VetMB, MBA, Cert. MCE, Dip. MCE, Cert. IoD, CMC, MRCVS, MIBC, FIOD. Certified Management Consultant, PRINCE2 Registered Practitioner Christian Bamber's new 'Outside In' column With over a decade of strategic and operational experience within both commercial and not-for-profit sectors, Christian has developed a portfolio of corporate strategy services that combines the latest strategic thinking from the world’s thought leaders with a highly practical and tailored approach to the real-world context. Christian graduated with a Masters degree (MA) from Christ’s College, Cambridge University, and continued with his studies at Cambridge gaining a degree in veterinary medicine (VetMB) shortly after. Having owned and successfully managed his own multi-site veterinary practice, Christian began providing consultancy services to business owners, rapidly expanding from veterinary practice into other business sectors. With a return to university, this time to the University of Bath (one of the top business schools in Europe), Christian left with a Masters in Business Administration (MBA) majoring in corporate strategy. This was soon followed by achieving the Certificate in Management Consulting (Cert. MCE) and the Diploma in Management Consulting (Dip. MC), before finally being awarded the highest recognition of management consulting expertise, that of status of Certified Management Consultant (CMC). Christian’s resources are complemented by his networks through being a member of the Institute of Business consulting (MIBC) and a Fellow of the Institute of Directors (FIOD). Before starting Approach Strategy, Christian was the Director of Service Delivery for The Blue Cross for three years, a national charity with revenues of over £28 million. During his time with The Blue Cross, he led the redesign of its corporate strategy, and applied Lean and Value Management/Engineering techniques to help bring the charity from a position of unsustainable annual deficits to making a significant positive annual return. His experience as an executive team member has lead to him receiving the Certificate in Company Direction (Cert. IoD), awarded by the Institute of Directors in recognition of demonstrating the expertise and integrity needed to meet the challenges of board membership in today’s business environment. More recently, he has been granted Fellowship status of the Institute of Directors. Christian is now the Principal Consultant and Director of Approach Strategy, a consulting company specialising in “no-nonsense” corporate and operational strategy services for service industries. What is 'Outside In'? The veterinary profession has developed in terms of the quality of its business practices in recent years, spearheaded in many aspects by the growing number and size of large groups of practices run often by non-vets who are more “business-minded”. However, the profession still lags behind other industries with respect to matters of strategy, management and operations and huge opportunity exists to bring it in line with, or at least nearer to, other industries and professions. "The idea behind Outside In is to look from the outside in and to discuss and apply best practice from all industries and sectors", says Christian. "The unique aspect of this is that it will always be examined in a veterinary context as I am a vet and have owned and run my own practice for a number of years. However, I have recently worked across industries and sectors, and have resources and networks within a wide variety of these. This will give a different perspective on veterinary matters from that covered in the mainstream publications without losing the veterinary relevance." Christian's aim is to offer insights and thoughts on a number of topics broadly captured by the umbrella of strategy, management and operations.
