Credit: World Horse Welfare World Horse Welfare is now calling for abstracts from the world’s academic, research and scientific community as well as from working equid welfare practitioners for presentation at the 7th International Colloquium on Working Equids to be held at the Royal Holloway, University of London from July 1-3 2014. There are an estimated 100 million working horses, donkeys and mules sustaining the livelihoods of people around the world, but their contribution – and their need for good care and welfare – are often overlooked. World Horse Welfare works to improve the welfare of thousands of working equids in Cambodia, Guatemala, Honduras, Lesotho, Mexico, Nicaragua, Senegal and South Africa in addition to its extensive work in the UK and Europe, and will focus this Colloquium on answering the question: “How do we demonstrate the importance of working equid welfare to human livelihoods?” The Colloquium is a recognised forum for discussing new research in the field of working equid welfare, and World Horse Welfare would like to encourage contributions from all those involved with working equids or people in developing countries where working equids are relied upon for transportation or agriculture – which are relevant to the following questions:
  1. What role do working equids play in human livelihoods – and how well is this currently recognised?
  2. Does a holistic approach to improving equine welfare produce better outcomes?
  3. What is the role of veterinary science?
All abstracts will be considered by the Colloquium’s Scientific Committee. Those accepted for presentation will be allocated into either oral (15 minute) or poster presentation sessions. The event will take place at the Royal Holloway, University of London, Egham Hill, Egham, Surrey. TW20 0EX. UK. Registration for the event will open on 1st October 2013. If you would like your research to be considered, please submit your abstract by 20th September 2013 using the online submission form http://www.worldhorsewelfare.org/abstracts. Authors will be advised of the status of their submission by 20th January 2014. For more information please contact World Horse Welfare’s Press Officer Amy Fordham on 01953 497248 and 07824 302640 or email [email protected]
