House of Commons debate encourages progress in fight against UK’s cruel puppy farming trade Animal welfare campaigners PupAid have proclaimed yesterday’s Parliamentary debate on puppy farming and sale of puppies and kittens a huge success. MPs debated these specific issues yesterday (September 4th) after a PupAid e-petition calling for a ban on the sale of puppies and kittens without their mums present, e.g. in pet shops, garden centres successfully collected well over the target of 100,000 required to trigger a Commons debate. Founder of PupAid TV vet Marc Abraham praised the parliamentary proceedings led by rescue dog owning Stoke South MP Rob Flello, after around 80 MPs attended with very broad cross-party support – with close to 40 MPs actually speaking up for animal welfare. Marc says "On behalf of PupAid I’m delighted we won this ground breaking three hour debate asking for urgent changes in laws to protect the UK’s pets; and movement in the right direction from DEFRA – who clarified local authorities do in fact have “considerable discretion” to act and ban sale of particular types of animal. “This result is the perfect building block to now make some long awaited progress in the fight against puppy farming and irresponsible pet sales. PupAid promotes rescue pet adoption and to always ask breeders “Where’s Mum?” as the only options when choosing a cat or dog and our advice was well-echoed in the Chamber.” Mr Abraham launched Pup Aid’s campaign five years ago after seeing a rise in sickly, unvaccinated, and diseased pet shop-bought puppies hospitalized in his practice. PupAid is run by just three volunteers - Stuart Vernon, Rebecca Weller, and Marc Abraham – pictured presenting their e-petition to No. 10 Downing St - and has massive social media support, including from big celebrities like Ricky Gervais and Brian May. Marc, who practices as a vet at Northdale Vets in West Sussex, continues “I'm extremely proud of my PupAid team and everyone who supports us to make yesterday happen. It’s now onwards and upwards for the future of the welfare of UK's pets and we look forward to the next positive steps in the fight against puppy farming, irresponsible pet sales, and impulse buying of puppies and kittens.” PupAid also organise an annual awareness raising event in Primrose Hill, London which takes place tomorrow Saturday 6th September and will host a fun dog show judged by celebrities, haver-a-go agility, doggy displays, boutique trade stands, and live acoustic music. PupAid also support the Kennel Club’s Puppy Awareness Week. For more info visit www.pupaid.org
