Veterinary Thermal Imaging (VTI) is delighted to welcome Anna Schumann as the new thermographer for the county of Surrey.
Anna is a Registered Veterinary Nurse who has been involved with the veterinary profession for the past 20 years in a variety of different roles, most recently in critical care at a specialist referral hospital. Becoming a VTI thermographer allows Anna to combine her experience and knowledge in both clinical cases and business with state of the art technology, which can be used as a diagnostic tool and for a number of other applications.
“I'm really pleased to be part of the VTI team,” says Anna. “Due to my background as a veterinary nurse, and my experience with small animals, I plan to concentrate on canine imaging and investigate the applications within the small animal veterinary sector, particularly clinically and for working dogs. I also have a passion for wildlife, fuelled by period of conservation work in Africa, and I would love to be able to take thermal imaging in to the wildlife sector. I am also fully trained and very happy to carry out equine thermography."
VTI is the UK’s largest all species thermography service. Whilst most of the company's work has been in the equestrian sector, a growing number of canine patients are now being seen with thermal imaging being used as both a diagnostic and management tool to identify musculoskeletal complaints, dental problems, and even as an aid to detecting malignant growths. The team routinely provide thermal imaging reports on a variety of other animals such as horses and livestock as the service is fully mobile and the scans are non-invasive, meaning the animals don't require sedation to have thermal images taken.
“We are thrilled to have Anna join the team,” says Helen Morrell, Managing Director of VTI. “Anna comes from veterinary background and this, combined with the in-depth training that she's received to become a VTI thermographer, means that she’s incredibly well equipped to provide an exceptional service for all species of animal in the Surrey area. We're really pleased to have Anna as part of VTI.”
Thermal imaging maps the heat patterns across the animal's body, where hotspots are illustrated these can indicate inflammation or an increase in circulation, and cold spots can show a reduction in circulation which is most commonly caused by scar tissue, neurological conditions, swelling or thrombosis. The team study these images and then, using their in-depth knowledge, put together a detailed report that can be given to the animal's vet, physiotherapist or any other professional associated with the animal's care. The service is cost effective as there’s no need to sedate or transport the animal and, as cameras are fully mobile and come to the owner’s home or the veterinary surgery. Scans start at just £30 plus travel.
