A quick reference guide that aims to help sheep farmers with the management of worms and fluke has been launched by Norbrook.

The new guide covers the lifecycle, clinical signs and impact of roundworms, tapeworm and liver fluke, together with practical advice on assessing the parasite burden within a flock in order to avoid unnecessary treatment.

Chris Geddes, Marketing Manager for Norbrook says helping sheep farmers with proactive control of parasites is a key aim of the guide.

“Spotting the early signs of worm and fluke burdens can save farmers from significant economic and welfare implications. Worms and liver fluke pose a major threat to sheep in the UK, and can impact on health and performance.”

Recent data has shown an increase in slaughterhouse liver condemnations, indicating a hike in sheep infested with the parasitic worm infection, fasciolosis.[1] Liver fluke disease can occur in three main forms: acute, subacute and chronic fasciolosis. Acute fasciolosis can be fatal, with sudden death occurring in up to 10% of cases.[2]

Rebekah Dudek, Veterinary Advisor at Norbrook says: “Anthelmintic resistance and pasture management are key factors to consider when designing an effective anthelmintic programme. This new guide provides a basis for rational product choice in order to optimise control.”

She adds that a good flock health plan should include control strategies for worm and fluke burdens which, in clinical cases, could cause reduced appetite, diarrhoea or anaemia.

Written in a quick and easy-to-read format, the Best practice guide for fluke and worm control in sheep is available free from local veterinary surgeons, trade stores, Norbook Territory Managers or by logging onto www.norbrook.com/resources.
