Two Newmarket-based vets who presented papers at BEVA Congress in September have won prestigious BEVA awards for their outstanding clinical research. Dr Romain Paillot of the Animal Health Trust has won the Voorjaarsdagen Award while Robert Dallas of Rossdales has received the Sam Hignett Award.
The Voorjaarsdagen Award marks the close relationship between BEVA Congress and the Voorjaarsdagen Conference in Amsterdam. The award is selected and presented bi-annually, once at each Congress and is open to all those presenting a clinical research paper. Judging is based on a number of factors including originality, clinical relevance, scientific rigor, and presentation.
Dr Romain Paillot of the Animal Health Trust, Centre for Preventive Medicine, Newmarket won this award for his research paper on Equine Influenza and Equine Herpes virus vaccination: evaluation of immune response and safety of concurrent administration of Equip® FT and Equip® EHV 1, 4[1]. His prize includes an expenses paid trip to the Voorjaarsdagen Conference in April 2014, where he will have the opportunity to present his paper again.
All clinical research presentations from general equine practice are eligible for the Sam Hignett Award, which was set up in honour of the past BEVA President of the same name. The award is judged through a continuous process of assessment throughout the Clinical Research sessions at Congress.
Robert Dallas, a partner at Rossdales Veterinary Surgeons won this award for his research on Musculoskeletal injury in Arabian racehorses: A study of injury distribution and prevalence in one training yard in the United Kingdom[2].
Paul Jepson, President of BEVA, said: “The calibre of the clinical research papers presented at BEVA this year was exceptional. However, both Romain Palliot’s and Robert Dallas’s were particularly outstanding making them very deserving winners of these two important awards.”
