BOVA UK, the first veterinary sterile specials facility of its kind in the UK, has appointed two Sales Managers. Emma Jones and Victoria Dawson bring a strong combination of experience in veterinary pharmacology, sales and veterinary nursing to enhance support for practices in the complex field of specials medications.

BOVA UK was granted a Veterinary Medicines Directorate (VMD) licence to manufacture sterile and non-sterile specials for the UK market in March 2017. It is the only company in the UK to have such authorisation from the VMD.  Pharmaceutical specials are tailored medications, produced in specific dosages and formulations to meet the particular needs of individual patients. They broaden the treatment options available to vets and their patients and can enhance compliance. The company is initially focusing on equine veterinary specials but will be expanding into the small animal sector early next year.

Emma Jones has been appointed as Sales and Marketing Manager for the South of the UK. She has had a successful career in the pharmaceutical industry in various business units for the past seven years with the last two and half in the equine veterinary sector. Previously she was a head veterinary nurse at a practice in Dorset and has a keen interest in riding, running and renovating her house.

Victoria Dawson has been appointed as Sales and Marketing Manager for the North of the UK. She started her career as an equine nurse in Gloucestershire before moving into project managing clinical research trials. She has spent the past twelve years in the veterinary sales industry, most recently focusing on purely equine roles.  Victoria rides regularly and has a keen interest in horse racing.

With more than 50 years of experience in the industry BOVA is committed to broadening the treatment options available to vets and their patients. Nick Bova, Managing Director of BOVA UK said: “I am delighted to welcome Emma and Victoria to the team.  BOVA considers its UK facility to be part of a world-class establishment. Compliance and quality assurance are pivotal to all that we do. The appointment of Emma and Victoria reflects our commitment to the highest standards.”

BOVA UK is a subsidiary of BOVA Compounding, Australia, a company founded by Nicholas Bova in 2008 as an extension of the family pharmacy business, founded in 1968. It is now the largest veterinary compounder in Australia, has more than 70 employees and services thousands of vets.

The manufacture of specials medications in the UK is a tightly regulated process. While some human healthcare companies are authorised to supply veterinary specials under licence in the UK, BOVA is currently the only company in the UK to have specific veterinary authorisation to manufacture sterile specials.

BOVA UK has been audited by the VMD to ensure it follows Good Manufacturing Principles when preparing its formulations. This includes ensuring that raw materials are sourced from manufacturers recognised for their high standards and quality pharmaceutical materials. All of the equipment at Bova has been validated and confirmed it is fit for purpose. Staff must also be trained and validated before they are able to prepare any formulations for clients. The company is meticulous with its adherence to strict quality assurance guidelines when preparing sterile medications and uses a bespoke positive pressure suite that has been certified for sterile compounding.
