BVA Announces Council Election Results

The British Veterinary Association is delighted to announce the results of the first ever all-member elections to BVA Council.

The one-member-one-vote election took place in 9 of the 12 UK regions, with three candidates elected unopposed:
  • East Midlands - James Russell

  • East of England - Julia Boness

  • London - Stephen Barabas (elected unopposed)

  • North East - Douglas Palmer (elected unopposed)

  • North West - Bridget Taylor

  • Northern Ireland Andy Hillan (elected unopposed)

  • Scotland Kathleen Robertson

  • South East Joe Sprinz

  • South West Bob Moore

  • Wales Ifan Lloyd

  • West Midlands Erica Martin

  • Yorkshire and the Humber Brendan Clarke
Online and postal voting was organised by the independent organisation Electoral Reform Services (ERS) and ran from 10th January to 18th February. The election attracted an impressive 30% turnout – at the top end of what is expected of membership organisations, according to ERS.

The 12 newly elected regional representatives will be a vital link between BVA members on the ground and the BVA’s policy and member services activities. For the first time all UK members will have a directly elected representative on BVA Council.

The regional representatives will join the other members of BVA Council, including the BVA Officers, chairs of the BVA’s five standing committees, three past presidents, two recent graduate representatives, and representatives of the BVA’s specialist divisions (see notes to editors for full list).

The first meeting of the new Council will take place on 6th April 2011.

Commenting, Harvey Locke, President of the BVA, said:

“I would like to thank all of those members who put themselves forward for election and I am absolutely delighted to congratulate the twelve new regional representatives and welcome them on to BVA Council.

“We have been overwhelmed by the level of engagement with our members throughout the election. The 30% turnout has exceeded our expectations, putting us at the top of what is expected of membership organisation elections.

“It is clear that the future of the BVA is very important to our membership and through their regional representatives and specialist divisions they will be able to have a say on the many issues that the BVA is dealing with.

“Next month we will be launching our new online community platform to enable all our members to network with peers, debate important issues and, importantly, to influence BVA policies and decisions. Our regional representatives will be contactable through the community to discuss any matter of interest to our members.

“These are very exciting times for the BVA and I’d like to thank all our members getting involved and supporting their association.”
