Ceva Animal Health has published a technical review on pig scour. It provides vets with an easy-reference guide to the main causes and clinical signs of this common and potentially fatal condition.
Scour in growing pigs can, at worst, result in high mortality and at best, cause significant weight loss and damage to the intestinal mucosa. Causes of scour in growing pigs: an overview summarises the causative agents of scour throughout the stages of growth, from sucking piglets through to finisher pigs.
Although it is difficult to be too prescriptive about assigning clinical signs to specific diseases because of variable immunity and the occurrence of mixed infections, the review provides useful guidelines to aid accurate diagnosis. Preventative management strategies are also discussed where applicable.
Ceva continues to provide practitioners with sound expertise on the responsible and sustainable use of veterinary anti-infectives through its Cevolution programme. The company has a comprehensive swine portfolio which includes the antimicrobials Cevaxel®, Coliscour®, Florkem®, Marbox®, Spectam® Scourhalt, and Tiamvet®, as well as the antiprotozoan Cevazuril®.
