As part of the 250th anniversary of the creation of the veterinary profession, practitioners from all over Europe will gather in Brussels for a conference between 19th and 20th May as part of ‘EU Veterinary Week’. The theme of the conference is “Crisis management in the food chain" – an increasingly critical issue for vets. The event will bring participants from all over the continent including the Chief Veterinary Officers from EU Member States and other countries, international organisations, EU veterinary faculties, stakeholder organisations and journalists. The event is being held as part of Vet Year 2011, to promote knowledge and understanding of the profession and to mark its 250th year in existence. (2) The World Society for the Protection of Animals (WSPA) (3) will be speaking at the conference on ‘Crisis Management and Animal Welfare – a balancing act’ on the morning of Friday 20th May to highlight where animal welfare, a concept which, to date, has not formed an intrinsic part of vet practice, fits into crises. WSPA is involved in large-scale disaster and rabies-control programmes around the world and has many years’ experience in both areas: WSPA’s vets and their partners have rescued animals in disasters in – amongst others – Myanmar, India, Haiti, Bolivia, Australia, Brazil, Sri Lanka and Japan. Apart from its emergency response activities, the organisation also works to obtain the inclusion of animals in disaster risk reduction plans. WSPA is also engaged in the humane eradication of rabies via animal vaccination - shown to be the most effective way to control rabies, supported by the World Health Organization. WSPA is involved in humane rabies control programmes in Bali, Sierra Leone, Nepal, Sri Lanka and Zanzibar, amongst others. James Sawyer, Head of Disaster Management at WSPA International said: “We congratulate the veterinary profession on its 250th anniversary and, at this conference, look forward to sharing our experience on the necessity of incorporating welfare into responses to disasters and diseases implicating animals. We fundamentally believe that veterinary practitioners are uniquely placed to affect the humanitarian response to animals in disasters and zoonoses, and that welfare is an essential concern in any such operation.” “Crisis management in the food chain” is taking place in the GASP room, Charlemagne building, rue de la Loi 170, 1040 Brussels, Belgium, from Thursday 19th to Friday 20th May.
