Hill’s Pet Nutrition has announced innovations that will provide vets and nurses with an expanded portfolio of products proven to manage FLUTD (feline lower urinary tract disease). A major benefit, given the number of obese cats in the UK, is the addition of a new Prescription Diet™: Feline c/d™ Multicare Reduced Calorie. The taste of Prescription DietTM Feline c/dTM Multicare, in both dry and chunks in gravy pouches, has also been upgraded and there is new scientific evidence on the efficacy of sterile struvite stone dissolution for the products, with dissolution occurring in as little as 2 weeks.1 Pack shot Better Choices Prescription Diet Feline c/d Multicare Reduced Calorie Feline is a new dry product that helps to manage the higher incidence of FLUTD in overweight cats – FLUTD is 49% more prevalent in overweight and obese cats2. The controlled fat and calorie levels in c/d Multicare Reduced Calorie and clinically proven levels of L-carnitine help to reduce fat build up and maintain lean muscles mass. Like c/d Multicare, its formula also dissolves sterile struvite uroliths in just 14 days1. Prescription Diet c/d Multicare Reduced Calorie is formulated with omega-3 fatty acids to reduce the distress and discomfort associated with conditions such as FIC (Feline Idiopathic Cystitis); in addition obesity has been associated with systemic inflammation3 for which omega-3 fatty acids are beneficial4,5. The reduced calorie product is the perfect choice for obese-prone cats with FLUTD. A Matter of Taste Prescription Diet Feline c/d Multicare Chicken dry kibble offers a significant improvement in taste and studies show it is preferred over the leading competitor’s brand by a wide margin6. The taste improvements relate in part to the new shape of the kibble. This product is suitable for both initial nutritional management of FLUTD of most causes, long-term management of struvite, oxalate, certain calcium phosphate crystals and uroliths, urethral plugs and FIC. Ensuring the product tastes great encourages clients to follow veterinary recommendations and as a result helps more cats. Clinically Proven New evidence has demonstrated that sterile struvite stones can be dissolved in as little as 14 days of feeding the Feline c/dTM Multicare product1. At the American College of Veterinary Internal Medicine Forum in May 2010, MacLeay et al reported the preliminary results of a prospective study demonstrating the dissolution of sterile struvite uroliths in cats with naturally occurring urolithiasis. In the study, cats with uroliths suspected to be struvite (based on radiographic appearance) were fed Prescription Diet Feline c/d Multicare and rapid dissolution of the stones occurred in as little as two weeks. Together the c/d portfolio of Multicare, Multicare Reduced Calorie and soon to arrive, new Multicare Chunks in Gravy pouches, offers a complete range for the management of FLUTD.
