Expert Speakers Highlight The Use Of Pain Management Tools

Nearly 700 vets attended a webinar sponsored by Vétoquinol on the evening of the 19th October to find out more about treating pain in pets. The session was opened by Dr Jo Murrell, who described ways to develop a peri-operative pain management strategy. The use of multimodal drug therapies to control pain and the application of pain scales within practices was addressed. The Glasgow Pain Scale is, in the speaker’s opinion, one of the most useful methods of assessing the level of pain and a link is available from www.cimydog.co.uk to allow clinicians to download an assessment form which will enable the technique to be implemented within practices.

Gary Coxon, Technical Services Vet at Vétoquinol talked about the company’s new NSAID, Cimalgex®, a new COX-2 inhibitor and he also explained how the product could be used in long term and perioperative pain management.

Kate White, Associate Professor in Veterinary Anaesthesia and Head of Division of Medicine at Nottingham University Veterinary School, discussed the use of client specific outcome measures in assessing pain in more chronic cases and the differentiation of acute and chronic pain.

The sessions can be viewed again at www.thewebinarvet.com/vetoquinol-webinars. There are CPD certificates available to download as well as supplementary information. Further information on some of the issues discussed in the webinar can be found on the Chronic Pain in the Dog: Decision Making and Risk Management blog, which is available to view on www.vetsurgeon.org .
