Animal Trust Veterinary Surgeons has teamed up with the national charity Dog’s Trust to offer free microchipping for dogs local to the Manchester area. The veterinary group has two sites and will run the microchipping clinic on weekday afternoons at its new branch in Failsworth, North Manchester. The service will run from April, depending on availability of stock, and is part of the vet group’s initiative to promote responsible pet ownership. Veterinary surgeon and director, Owen Monie, highlighted the group’s commitment to providing affordable pet care for all,
“We’re delighted to be working with Dog’s Trust on this project. At Animal Trust our goal is to ensure that high quality veterinary care is accessible to everyone. Eligibility for the free microchip is not means-dependent – we want to help drive the message that taking good care of your pet sits hand-in-hand with being a responsible pet owner. Being microchipped means that if your dog is lost or stolen it can be reunited with you very quickly, helping avoid a lengthy stay in government or charity kennels.”
Microchipping is to be made compulsory for all dogs in England from the 6th April 2016 and from the 1st March 2015 in Wales, following announcements made by Westminster and Welsh Governments. Local authorities and police, dog wardens and vets will all have microchip scanners and any dog found straying or acting dangerously will be scanned and its owner identified. Where a dog is found not be chipped, advice will be given on its benefits and the owner given a short period to comply with the law. Fines of up to £500 will be imposed for non-compliance.
The Animal Trust microchip clinic is open to all dog owners, and more than one dog can be presented. Pet owners do not have to be existing clients of Animal Trust. The owner will need to register their contact details to go onto a national microchip database. Owners of already-microchipped pets can present their pet for a microchip check.
