With parasites being one of the most common causes of a pet being presented to a vet, knowing your mycoses from your mites is important. This is compounded further when you consider that many parasitic diseases also pose a zoonotic threat. The UK contingent of the European Scientific Counsel for Companion Animal Parasites (ESCCAP UK) is hosting a free CPD day for vets to make sure that they are up to date with the very latest parasite information and able to advise their clients on the best control and treatment strategies. To be held at the Statham Lodge Country House Hotel in Cheshire on the 21st February, the structure and content of the day is inspired by the ESCCAP UK ‘Everyday Parasites’ poster which highlights some interesting and occasionally surprising statistics. For example, did you know that over 1.3 million of the 8 million cat owners in the UK don’t know that their pet has a flea infestation.1 Encouraging owners to ‘Live with their pet, not with its parasites’ the poster will be available in print on the day and will be available for ordering/downloading from www.esccapuk.org.uk/professionals.php?run=downloads in the new year. To register for this completely free of charge event and gain 6 hours of quality CPD, just e-mail: [email protected] or visit www.esccapuk-cpd.co.uk This CPD event kicks off another busy year for the ESCCAP UK team, who in 2012 appeared at all the major veterinary congresses, including the London Vet Show and also participated in ESCCAP EU’s ‘Toxocara 2012’ in Budapest. Attended by parasitologists, immunologists, healthcare professionals and vets, the event allowed this important parasitic disease to be discussed from all perspectives and the sharing of recent advances in treatment and control. ESCCAP EU Chairman, Professor James Duncan, hopes that the conference will “launch this neglected disease into the research, funding and policy frontline” and believes it will be “an important catalyst for further events.” The lectures from the event can now be viewed at www.keyskill.com. As well as the Everyday Parasites poster, there have been other new resources launched this year, including the second edition of the ESCCAP Control of Vector-Borne Diseases in Dogs and Cats Guidelines. ESCCAP UK wants the advice and information that they offer to be available to anyone at any time, so all ESCCAP UK resources can be downloaded for free or ordered in print from the ESCCAP UK website (www.esccapuk.org.uk). There are also two independent Twitter feeds; @ESCCAP_UK for veterinary professionals and @petparasites for pet owners, allowing all parties to be kept up to date with research developments, seasonal parasite risks and future events.
