The British Small Animal Veterinary Association wants to pay for you to travel abroad to study any aspect of companion animal science you like.

The Frank Beattie Travel Scholarship was established in 1988 in memory of Frank Beattie, a long-standing member of the BSAVA. It is awarded annually from a generous gift by Frank’s widow, Annie. The scholarship, normally worth £2000, has swollen to £4000 as a result of no suitable applications being received in 2010.

The fund is to help a BSAVA member to undertake a trip abroad to study a particular aspect of veterinary practice – something that fascinates them. The award is only open to BSAVA members engaged in clinical practice. This includes clinicians in University centres.

2004 winner, Liz Mullineaux, used the fund to develop her interest in indigenous wildlife and travelled to the other side of the world to spend time with rehabilitators and vets in New Zealand. She says, The process of application was really easy. People often fail to apply for these things so your odds will be better than you think. The trip really inspired my interest, so after I came back from New Zealand I registered for a part time clinical doctorate with the University of Edinburgh using case material form the wildlife casualties that I see through my work in practice. I finished this in February.”

2008 Winner, Karen Wendlandt, was keen to attend the ACVO William Macgrane Basic Science Course in Veterinary and Comparative Ophthalmology and Histologic Basis of Ocular Disease Short Course in Madison, Wisconsin. Karen, who works in a small animal practice in Hampshire, used the Frank Beattie scholarship to help advance her knowledge in this area. Her passion for travel had only been overtaken by her interest in ophthalmology, and this award allowed her to combine both.

Applicants should describe, in no more that 500 words, how they would use the award, and are free to choose the study topic. The deadline is 11 November and the successful applicant will be notified by the end of February 2012 and the award will be presented at BSAVA Congress in the April.

Our recipient is required to undertake the study tour within the subsequent 12 months, and submit a written report of their findings for publication by BSAVA.

BSAVA Members are reminded that nominations for the rest of the BSAVA Awards should be in by 11 November 2011.

You can apply online at www.bsava.com where you can also nominate a colleague in any of the other award categories.
