On the 21st January Glasgow Vet students learned about KPI’s as part of the Veterinary Business Management Association’s (VBMA) Business Certification Programme. Jeff Gascoyne, Director of Business Acquisitions at Vets4Pets and Companion Care presented an interactive lecture about KPI’s (Key Performance Indicators) a term regularly referred to and relied on in business and becoming more utilised in veterinary practice. Attended by a record number of students, the lecture explained how KPIs are used to measure the success of a business and how to identify what your business KPI’s should be as a vet practice. Jeff Gascoyne said about his lecture; “KPI’s are a really important part of measuring how successful a business is and help in future planning. A veterinary practice of course is also a business and the aim of my lecture is to help our future vets think more like business people, hopefully helping them become successful vets as employees or practice owners”. The lecture forms part of a full support package for the Glasgow vet school including the sponsorship of the less formal Burns Night Supper and Ceilidh. The support of Glasgow Vet School is part of a comprehensive and national Vet Group university and graduate support programme which also includes a high quality Business EMS course, a new graduate programme and aims to provide even more support with lectures, seminars and advice on job hunting and CV writing. “By having a fully established and successful company such as Vets4Pets and Companion Care to come and talk to us it gives us a real insight into the world outside of the university bubble we get so used to as students. As members of the VBMA we hope these important skills will give us a greater level of expertise that will hopefully make us more employable and aid us in our progression through the industry” Elizabeth Hodges, 3rd Year vet Student, VBMA Glasgow President.
