Its All About Vet Nurses Too At BEVA Congress

BEVA Congress (9th – 12th September 2015 at the Liverpool Arena Convention Centre) is as much about vet nurses as it is about vets. It hosts a vet nursing day each year, with themed lectures aimed specifically at the profession and presented by a combination of vets and vet nurses.
This year on Saturday 12th September at there will be a day of practical lectures on aspects of caring for the hospitalised horse. In the morning session Joanna Suthers from B&W Equine Hospital will discuss how to appraise a paper. Dawn McHugh from Newmarket Equine Hospital will take a look at current evidence-based practice in theatre nursing. Louise Southwood and Katherine King from Liphook Equine Hospital will cover nurse and intern theatre essentials in abdominal surgery and arthroscopic surgery respectively. A session on inpatient care will cover management of the recumbent horse (Nicola Pusterla from University of California), care of acute and chronic starvation cases (Nicky Jarvis from Redwings Horse Sanctuary), dystocia and care of the post parturient mare (Bonny Millar from Rossdales Equine Hospital) and atypical myopathy – masquerading as colic for years or an emerging disease (Victoria South from Liphook Equine Hospital).
The afternoon session will start with a down-to-earth appraisal of the hospitalised horse and their owners. Gemma Pearson from Dick Vet Equine Hospital will discuss dealing with the difficult and dangerous horse. Clare Scantlebury from University of Liverpool will look at horse owner approaches to equine health and the role of veterinary advice. Angela Garner from Environmental Animal Sanctuary & Education will discuss the sensitive topic of euthanasia and dealing with grieving horse owners and David Green from Veterinary Defence Society Ltd will provide some pointers on dealing with difficult clients.
The closing session will explore hospital techniques, covering the investigation of wounds (Padraig Kelly from University of Liverpool), intravenous catheter placement, care and complications (Sarah Ross from University of Bristol), abdominal ultrasonography and getting the best images (Rachel Conwell from Equimed Referrals Ltd) and radiography: reaching the parts other nurses can’t reach (Katherine King).
