Jurox (UK) Limited’s anaesthesia and analgesia lectures were a big hit at the London Vet Show (LVS) with a capacity audience at some of the lectures where delegates learnt more about ‘Considerations in canine caesarean section’ and ‘Alfaxalone – the evidence for its place in UK anaesthesia practice.

A key highlight from the series of lectures was the popular ‘Considerations in canine caesarean section’ lecture.  Presented by Jayne Clark BVSc BSc(Hons) GP Cert SAM MRCVS and Elizabeth Barker BVetMed(Hons) Cert AVP (VA) PgCert MRCVS, veterinary technical advisors at Jurox, both of whom are trained by veterinary anaesthesia diploma holders and members of the Association of Veterinary Anaesthetists (AVA), the duo stated that there were no absolute, perfect protocols out there for C-sections and it can be challenge to deal with them for many reasons.  These include a difference in physiology between a pregnant animal and a non-pregnant one, a lack of specifically licensed anaesthetics and analgesics, possible emergency presentation, a difference in owner versus breeder priorities and finally considerations for both the bitch and her pups.

Jayne and Elizabeth emphasised that in line with the Association of Veterinary Anaesthetists recommendations, a standard anaesthesia checklist should be in place before a caesarean section is performed.  They provided a thorough overview of pre-anaesthetic stabilisation and preparation, premedication recommendations, local anaesthetic techniques such as epidurals and line blocks, the benefits of using NSAIDs. induction including the use of Alfaxan, and neonate resuscitation.

“Anaesthetising a patient for caesarean section is a challenge for many reasons; the lack of specifically licensed anaesthetics/analgesics means it can be difficult knowing which to choose, plus you have to take into consideration the needs of multiple patients in that one procedure. There is no single perfect protocol, no ‘one size fits all’ approach, so our aim with our presentation was to give an overview of how to adopt ‘best practice’, from both anecdotal reports from specialist anaesthetists and an evidence based review of the current literature,” comments Jayne.

Elizabeth adds: “I think that it is quite unusual in veterinary medicine to have such a good evidence base supporting the use of one drug for a specific indication. In this case there is very good quality evidence to support the use of Alfaxan as the induction agent of choice for the canine caesarean section.

“As vets at Jurox we aim to educate busy practitioners about this evidence and then to support them in their choice of Alfaxan by providing training and support for all practice members to ensure they are confident in choosing and using Alfaxan. This will allow them to provide the best anaesthetic experience they can for their caesarean section patients and to give the puppies the best start possible.”

The lectures were followed by an interactive panel Q&A on ‘How can Alfaxan work for my practice?’ where delegates put their questions to an esteemed panel chaired by Richard Beckwith, Jurox UK country manager, which included Matt Gurney BVSc CertVA DipECVAA MRCVS, Phil Burns BVetMed MRCVS from Lakeview Veterinary Centre, Rich Irvine BVSc MRCVS, Jurox UK vet services manager and Michael Unsworth BVetMed MRCVS, Jurox technical advisor
