Keith ChandlerThe appointment of Keith Chandler as President of the Association for 2012/13 will be formally approved at BEVA Congress 12th-15th September 2012, at the International Convention Centre, Birmingham. He will take over the role from Ben Mayes at the end of the Congress. Paul Jepson will become President Elect and Andrew Harrison will become Junior Vice President. Keith is the association's second Scottish-based President is its 50 year history. He previously served on BEVA Council between 2001 and 2006, where he was a part of the education committee and also chaired the Dental Working Party, before rejoining Council in 2010 as Junior Vice President. Keith Chandler qualified from the University of Glasgow Veterinary School in 1993 and has worked in both mixed and specialist equine practice, in the UK and overseas. He gained the CertEP in 1997 and, after a spell as a lecturer at the University of Edinburgh, he founded the UK's most northerly equine practice, Kessock Equine Veterinary Clinic in Inverness. Keith is married to fellow vet Rachel and they have two young children, Eilidh and Hamish. He said: “It's a privilege to be the 2012-2013 BEVA President and I thoroughly relish the challenge ahead. “BEVA is in a strong position after the hard work put in by my predecessors Ben and Deidre as well as the Chief Executive and the good team at our head office, near Newmarket. “The next year should be packed with great initiatives and a superb CPD programme for our members. In addition, we are about to publish guidance on responsible antimicrobial use as well as releasing a smart phone app to assist members in choosing the correct medicine and dose for their patients. “We recently launched a jobs page on the BEVA website and this is the just the start of BEVA trying to develop a more wholesome package of careers guidance for younger graduates who are in, or are considering a job in equine practice. We are also exploring the possibility of a mentoring scheme for members of our profession who work with horses. “I firmly believe that equine welfare is best served by well resourced and successful veterinary practices and on this basis, we are also considering facilitating 'equine business clubs' where practices would be invited to meet and discuss ways of working in these tough economic times. “Of course BEVA would not be what it is without our successful Annual Congress, which will be held in Manchester in 2013 and I would recommend that we all put those dates in our diary now!”
