Norbrook has announced a reduced milk withdrawal time in cattle from ten days to eight days for the long acting antimicrobial injection, Alamycin LA 300 – reducing the impact of milk waste and improving production efficiency.

The label change, approved by the Veterinary Medicines Directorate, is effective immediately.

Alamycin LA 300 protects cattle, sheep and pigs against bacterial infections with a single dose. A standard dose of 20mg per kg (1ml / 15kg) provides activity for three to four days, while a higher dose of 30mg per kg (1ml / 10kg) can also be administered for prolonged duration of activity, if required.

Rebekah Dudek, Norbrook Veterinary Advisor, says: “Discarded milk has a direct impact on farmer profits and the reduced withdrawal period for Alamycin LA 300 means that farmers can now benefit from throwing away less milk, which could positively impact on dairy profits, especially as recent UK farmgate prices from Defra show a steady month-on-month increase in milk prices, with average prices currently at 26.21ppl – a 2.7% increase from November 2016, and many experts optimistic these figures will continue to increase.”

Alamycin LA 300 is effective in treating diseases caused by, or associated with, organisms sensitive to oxytetracycline in cattle, sheep and pigs, including: pneumonia; atrophic rhinitis; erysipelas; pasteurellosis; joint-ill; navel-ill; summer mastitis in cows; ovine keratoconjunctivitis and enzootic abortion in sheep.

The change in withdrawal period for milk will take effect immediately; there is no change to the withdrawal period for meat when treating with Alamycin LA 300.

The clear dark amber liquid solution contains the active ingredient oxytetracycline, which prevents bacteria from producing essential proteins needed to grow, and the glass vial packaging provides a shelf life of two years from manufacture or 28 days once opened.  Alamycin LA 300 is available in 100ml packs.
