Last year's Moredun masterclass in action

Following this year’s highly successful Worm Egg Count MasterClass at the Moredun Research Institute, Edinburgh, Merial Animal Health is pleased to announce that it is running the event again in 2012.

The use of Worm Egg Counts (WECs) are now a vital part of any advice regarding anthelmintics given to clients so this expert masterclass is designed to equip SQPs and vet nurses with the expertise they need to undertake WECs at their practice or store. This training will add significant value to anthelmintic usage advice and sales, and enable veterinary nurses and SQPs to develop individual worming programmes for their clients based on best practice. Additionally, this training will qualify for 52 AMTRA CPD points.

The 2012 event will take place on Thursday 1st March from 9.30am until 5.00pm at the Moredun Research Institute just outside Edinburgh. The event will be lead by expert parasitologists Professor Jacqui Matthews, BVMS PhD MRCVS, and Dr Dave Bartley, BSc PhD and will include seminars on equine parasites and drug resistance, problem solving tutorials and a hands-on WEC practical learning and practicing techniques in the state-of-the-art lab.

Sophie Giddens from Chine House Vets attended this year’s event, which took place in January, and she gained a great deal from the day: “The course was really well set out. It was very informative and the practical gave me a good idea as to what method of worm egg count we could put into practice at our equine hospital. We have used a lot of information and ideas gained from the course to improve the worming and egg count service we provide for our clients and are currently updating our website.”

Graham Williams, Managing Director of Intelligent Worming, agrees: “We arranged for our full Adviser Team to attend and flew up from south Wales to understand the full implications of blanket worming and the need for horse owners to rethink their worming programmes. It has been invaluable over the last six months in explaining the importance of faecal egg counts and the methods of testing especially as we are now seeing such a high percentage of worm burdens in horses compared to previous years.
“SQP’s should attend to listen to Professor Jacquie Matthews who, in our opinion, is at the leading edge of understanding and dealing with the resistance issues that will be faced by horse owners in years to come – unless we change our worming approach!”

We expect this event to be extremely popular and places are limited so please book as soon as possible. Cost: £200 per delegate.
