Based at The Magpie Centre in King’s Lynn, the group has 16 horses providing riding and carriage driving lessons to over 100 disabled riders and drivers each week. Each horse has been entered onto Merial’s easy to use SMART online planner (www.smartworming.co.uk) in order to monitor and evaluate their worming needs, with all testing and worming treatment, if required, supplied free of charge. Merial’s Equine Manager Dr Emma Batson says: “Worm control is an essential part of horse care but for a whole yard it can be complicated and expensive. Our SMART worming planner takes away the complications, making it easy to implement a yard-wide strategy. As The Magpie Centre also has an interesting group of horses we will be studying their results to gain an insight into a typical yard’s worming problems. In return for allowing us to monitor them as a case study we are pleased to provide wormer treatments and worm egg count monitoring and are proud to support such a worthy charity as the Riding for the Disabled Association.” Centre Manager Mel Tomlinson says: “Being helped by Merial has saved the Magpie Centre initially £1,700 which was what our current worming plan for 17 horses was costing per annum, not to mention what the further savings will be once the egg counts are done, because based on these results not all horses may need require treatment. As the centre and yard manager I also have peace of mind that I’m getting professional, sound advice on worming strategies which will help keep my horses worm free and healthy.” Find out more about the SMART worming planner at www.smartworming.co.uk or contact your Merial Territory Manager.
