Mildmay Veterinary Centre in Winchester has become the first veterinary practice in the city to be awarded 'Hospital' status by the Royal College of Veterinary Surgeons (RCVS). This prestigious accreditation is awarded to veterinary practices which, according to RCVS standards, provide the highest level of service to their patients and owners, including the use of the latest technology and equipment and the employment of highly-trained staff. It is one of only a handful in Hampshire to have achieved this recognition. The Mildmay Veterinary group, established more than 30 years ago, is based in purpose-built premises on Easton Lane and has a branch in Overton. In preparation for its inspection by the RCVS in April 2014, it invested in a new hydrotherapy pool and new equipment which will extend the range of procedures that can be performed in-house. Commenting, Co-clinical Director Melanie Norris said: "Our previous inspection in 2009 had shown that we were close to achieving Hospital status so we wanted to go the extra mile to prove that we were worthy of this accreditation. "In addition to the significant investment in our new hydrotherapy pool and equipment, we also reviewed our clinical standards and protocols. It was satisfying to realise that many of our existing protocols and procedures were already up to hospital standard but we still had to work hard to collate a great deal of information to show to the inspectors. "Inspection Day - 1 April last year - was nerve-wracking for all of us! The inspectors spent several hours just walking around the practice, checking the facilities and equipment, asking lots of questions and watching us at work. They also checked through our files and visited our branch at Overton." Co-clinical Director Nikki Hoad added: "We were delighted to hear that we had achieved Hospital status and are proud of everyone in the team who work so hard every day to care for our patients and their owners in the best possible way. It is an enormous boost to all of us and gives us the satisfaction of knowing that the RCVS recognises that we are providing diagnostic and treatment facilities of the highest standard and offering an excellent level of care to our patients. "We are grateful to our clients for the trust they put in us and for helping us make Mildmay such an enjoyable place to work. We're certainly not stopping here and already have plans to extend the range of services we provide further still. In the meantime, we look forward to meeting new clients and their pets in the months ahead and showing them the facilities we offer here at Mildmay." The Mildmay Veterinary Centre is based on Easton Lane and can be contacted on 01962 854088.
