New Cat Pain Score Chart From Alstoe Helps Vets With Dosing Decisions

One of the commonest questions fielded by staff at Alstoe on the subject of its injectable opiate, Vetergesic, is ‘when is it okay to use more?’ The answer is usually ‘do you think the case needs more?’, but how does a veterinary surgeon or nurse know? In dogs, pain scale charts are well established, but cats are notoriously difficult to assess, making the selection and dose timings of analgesic products more challenging to the vet in practice. The “Vetergesic Composite Pain Scale for Cats” is now available in a wipe-clean plastic board format and also as a downloadable pdf for practices to assist in making the decision when it is the right time to use some more analgesic. Developed by the Alstoe team, in conjunction with leading anaesthetists, this behaviour-based pain scoring system for cats should enable practices to assess the patient’s condition at appointed or random timings. “It is designed as a one-off assessment, which can be repeated as required”, explained Dr. Ian Ryder of Alstoe. By taking a group of potential pain symptoms, it is hoped the practices will be confident to make decisions about analgesic protocols. It applies to all analgesic products, and not just Vetergesic. The Vetergesic Composite Pain Scale for Cats is available as part of a one-hour educational presentation, which can be delivered, at the practice. For further information or to arrange a visit, Alstoe may be contacted on 01347 878606 or [email protected]
