The Veterinary Defence Society (VDS) today, Thursday 17th August 2017, announced the integration of Carolyne Crowe Coaching, as another important step in the expansion of its well-respected training programme. This follows the addition of Dr Catherine Oxtoby to the team in Autumn 2016. The expanded team builds upon the Society’s long-established non-clinical training services, using its unique knowledge and experience to provide high quality, evidence based training to support and develop veterinary professionals and their colleagues. In addition to the current training focused on effective communication, the VDS will now provide a wide range of courses, seminars and bespoke training opportunities covering topics such as leadership, teamwork, coaching, mentoring and resilience.

The first of the expanded team’s new suite of training courses is the Veterinary Leadership Programme (VLP), developed with the support of Doctoral and Masters research carried out by Dr Catherine Oxtoby and Carolyne Crowe. The VLP is made up of a combination of online teaching, face-to-face learning, reflective practice and personal coaching and mentoring. The Programme is built around a pair of two-day workshops taking place in October 2017 and February 2018, supported by a series of coaching sessions and webinars during and after the workshops.

Carolyne Crowe said, ‘I am very excited about delivering the Veterinary Leadership Programme as part of the VDS’s suite of training opportunities. Through the VLP, we want to encourage confident, dynamic and flexible leaders who can engage, motivate and drive their own careers, their teams and their practices to success. The course will also help veterinary leaders to engender a culture that strengthens and develops the veterinary team within their practices and enables everyone to fulfil their potential’.

Christine Magrath, the trainer at the forefront of the Society’s communications skills training since its inception in 2000, said, ‘The expansion of the training team, and the range of topics and delivery methods offered, is an important development for the VDS. Not only can we help develop people become the best they can be, whether as individuals or in teams, but our unique insight into the profession can help us develop training that builds client engagement, improves quality of care and reduces veterinary risk – a winning position for everyone’.
