Pacific island countries suffer from a severe shortage of trained veterinarians, says Secretariat of the Pacific Community Land Resources Division Director Aleki Sisifa.

He said the LRD's para-veterinary training program was vital in building capacity in Pacific Island Countries and Territories to address this skills shortage.

"We are aware that Pacific island countries suffer from a severe shortage of trained veterinarians," he said.

"I wish to acknowledge the effort of Dr Robin Yarrow and colleagues in the taskforce that is working hard to progress the effort to sustainably build the veterinary capacity of the PICTs. The Commonwealth Veterinary Association and the Animal Welfare organisations including the International Fund for Animal Welfare (IFAW) provide much-needed technical advice is welcomed."

Mr Sisifa made the comments at the Pacific Heads of Veterinary and Animal Health Production Services meeting in Nadi yesterday.
