The 4th April 2011 was the opening evening for “Pub CPD” at the Castle Pub, Donnington, Newbury. The evening of pleasurable pints and educational points was organised by Donnington Grove Veterinary Surgery in Newbury. Pub CDP sign The night was kindly sponsored by Direct Medical Supplies and Dechra and it was their contribution towards the first round of drinks that set the tone for the first speaker, dental specialist, Chris Pearce of Barn Equine. Chris touched on a variety of issues and new advances in relation to cheek teeth. He also gave his opinions on the removal of cheek teeth as a standing procedure. Chris Pearce said afterwards “that he was delighted with the turnout and feed back of participants and he is looking forward to further ‘PUB CPD’ events” Photo of crowd attending CPD in the pub Bruce Bladon BVM&S, Cert EP, DESTS, Dipl ECVS, MRCVS of Donnington Grove Veterinary Surgery was the second speaker of the evening. The talk was entitled – “Cheek removal – the surgical solution!”. Bruce is one of the partners at O’Gorman, Slater, Main & Partners and has recently published an article on the removal of cheek teeth by lateral buccotomy along with a French surgeon Bernard Boussau and a former intern (Henry O’Neill) at the Newbury practice who is currently completing a surgical residency in the States. Both the talks were accompanied by the background noise of delegates chomping on dinner and sipping on drinks, which were served during the presentations. Emiliano Espinar and Bryan O’Meara were the course organisers. Emiliano, a Spaniard said “the aim is to have a relaxing end to the day with a pint and some food whilst learning a little about a veterinary topic – a bit like a siesta but in the evening time.” The evening talk was rounded off by a questions and answer session. The local BVA division (Royal Counties) support the ‘Pub CPD events” programme and the aim is to convene a meeting every 4 months. Speakers from the region are invited to come and present some of their specialties and areas of interest. The next topic is an update on the Revised Pre Purchase Examination Certificate and the New Pre-Purchase Examination Guidance Notes. Malcolm Morley BVSc MRCVS has been liasing with both BEVA and the RCVS in recent times and plans to outline the changes in Pre-Purchase examinations and his ‘pint’ of view. Charlie Schreiber BVetMed MRCVS will outline what does and can go wrong with pre-purchase examinations. This event is to be held on 25th July 2011 (19:30 -20:30).
