The European Community (EC) has awarded two projects in Mozambique worth €5 million over 4 years to Midlothian based international charity, VETAID. The projects, which are working with the poorest rural communities in Mozambique, aim to increase the food security of families by improving livestock and agricultural production and agricultural diversification. VETAID has worked extensively throughout Mozambique for seven years. “This will strengthen our capacity in Mozambique in particular and Africa in general” says Robert Bowen (Africa Regional Manager) “and enable VETAID to help the poorest of families to care for their animals. The animals gain and the people gain fulfilling our maxim of ‘Healthy Animals Healthy People’”. The projects start in January 2004. Notes VETAID is a not-for-profit, international development organisation working for reduction in poverty and increase in food security of people dependent on livestock. The purpose of our work is to strengthen livelihood strategies of resource-poor farmers by increasing the contribution made by their livestock, by promoting the rights of farmers and herders, and by partnering and building the capacity of local organisations.
