ROYAL CANIN has published a special edition Veterinary Focus manual, focussing on advice for graduates about to embark upon their veterinary career. This comprehensive manual gives tips on getting your first job, working in a high-performing veterinary team, defining and being a ‘good vet’, understanding the business and looking to the future. The journal is available to download via ROYAL CANIN’s Vet Practice Portal.  Printed copies are also available from each university’s Royal Canin Student Ambassador or company’s Veterinary Business Managers.

The journal firstly looks into choices presented to you when entering the workforce, working for a group or independent practice, interview skills, earning respect in the workplace, solutions around workplace conflicts, understanding your boss, time management, work-life balance and how to get the best out of your first practice. It then delves deeper into what practice field to work in, getting clinical experience, medical decision making, client communication and veterinary ethics. The journal also looks into running a business, understanding economics of a veterinary practice, key cost indicators, prescribing and selling medicine and foods, managing your career development and setting realistic goals and business investments.

The journal has been prepared by four specialists in practice management, including Philippe Baralon, Antje Blättner, Pere Mercader and Mark Moran. Philippe is a veterinary practice management consultant in 20 countries. Antje lectures and trains vets and vet nurses on client communication, marketing and other management-related topics in over 17 countries worldwide. Pere is the co-founder of Veterinary Management Studies and the Spanish Veterinary Practice Management Association (AGESVET) and has authored the textbook ‘Management Solutions for Veterinary Practices’. Mark is a consultant to the veterinary profession with over 15 years senior management experience. He is also a director of Vets in Business Limited, where he provides mentoring and support for veterinary owners and practice managers.

Lee Danks MRCVS, Veterinary Scientific Support Manager for ROYAL CANIN, said: “As undergraduates start considering their long-term career options and when new grads take those first steps, it’s imperative that we support this burgeoning talent entering our workforce, however we can.  Many changes are ahead for these individuals and the profession and the experience, advice and knowledge shared in this manual aims to help us all prepare.”

“Veterinary Focus delves into many topics such as oncology, urinary disorders, obesity, dealing with accidents and emergencies and often more managerial topics such as this one.  Many of our back-issues are available on-line [vetportal.royalcanin.co.uk] or from a member of the ROYAL CANIN team, including our Student Ambassadors in each university. The next edition will focus on gastroenterology disorders in dogs and cats.”
