Royal Canin To Host Urinary Webinars In March 2015

Urinary stones are commonly encountered in small animal practice and, whilst relatively uncommon, urolithiasis is a significant cause of lower urinary tract disease. To help vets and nurses better understand these conditions and the treatment options available to their patients, Royal Canin is hosting two webinars on the subject of urinary care. The first webinar will be focused on ‘Urine: how do I know what crystal or stone we have?’ (8.30pm, Tuesday 10 March 2015) and the second will explore ‘Urolithiasis in cats and dogs – is dietary management always the answer?’ (8.30pm, Tuesday 24 March 2015). During the first webinar, Nicola Ackerman RVN will explore the role of the veterinary nurse when presented with a urinary case. She will look at urinalysis (especially sediment analysis), the importance of using culture and sensitivity to select an appropriate antibiotic and also best practice for nurses when imaging cats and dogs with urinary stones. Dr Kit Sturgess MRCVS will be delivering the second webinar which will review how urolithiasis can be easily overlooked if a treatment-only route is taken. The webinar aims to briefly cover the differences in aetiology of urolithiasis in cats and dogs and the common presenting signs, as well as the relative merits of using ultrasound and radiology to achieve a diagnosis. Dr Sturgess will also focus on decision-making in the management and treatment of urolithiasis in the immediate and long-term, reviewing the role that surgery and diet has to play together with other adjunctive therapies.
