BSAVA Post grad logo Anyone considering applying for a place on the second year of the BSAVA Postgraduate Certificates in Medicine and Surgery is encouraged to register their interest and plan their enrolment in order to avoid disappointment, after the first year filled in twenty minutes. The first year of the BSAVA Postgraduate Certificate Programmes is now well underway, with students from all corners of the UK and beyond. Even at this early stage, students are reporting that the programme that was packed with so much promise is now delivering the results they wanted. As student Zoe Cleaver says “I chose this because I knew it would be recognised as a good quality programme. I am already starting to have a more logical approach to cases at work now; I can definitely apply the majority of what I am learning within the constraints of first-opinion practice, and also have productive, informed conversations with colleagues and referral centres”. The current students are a mix of recent and more experienced graduates, but all have one thing in common – they work in small animal practice, and aim to increase their knowledge and skills for the benefit of their patients and clients. Each programme is a blend of day courses and online resources and activities, providing structure and support, yet the flexibility essential for busy professionals. Only 30 students were accepted into each of the programmes in 2012, to ensure an excellent quality of teaching and student support. In 2013 the number of courses available will be doubled to allow a new intake of students without compromising class size. Most courses will still be held at Manchester and Woodrow House, with practical courses in the surgery programme at the University of Bristol and the College of Animal Welfare, Huntingdon. This expansion will allow a further 30 students to be accepted into each of the two programmes for January 2013. Competition for these new places is likely to be fierce. Applications may be submitted via the BSAVA website (www.bsava.com) from 9am on Monday 1st October 2012, and will be accepted on a first come first served basis. For further information please visit www.bsava.com/postgradcert or email [email protected]. Student Andy Nelson says; “I would recommend it, I’d say go for it. You’ll learn lots, get to know like-minded people to share experiences with, and be able to make a real difference to what you do on a day-to-day basis.” Frances Barr, BSAVA Academic Director who launched the programme, says, “These pioneering students are now well into their studies. From the perspective of the teachers, it has become clear that they are committed and enthusiastic. The staff are really enjoying interacting with a close-knit group who are comfortable asking questions and willing to enter into debate. So we are delighted with year one and are taking all that experience into our second year”.
