Working horse collecting water Working horse collecting water Now open for registration the Colloquium is due to be held over three days from 1-3 July 2014. The 7th of its kind, next year it will be hosted for the first time by World Horse Welfare as its vast and dedicated work in Africa, Central America and Asia continues to be recognised. The Colloquium, now open for registration, is an essential event for the international audience of working equine practitioners as well as those working in human international development, including veterinarians, technical advisers, project managers, community development practitioners, academics and equine and human welfare NGOs. Next year's Colloquium will address this important issue: How do we best demonstrate the importance of working equid welfare to human livelihoods? The Colloquium will feature two days of presentations and breakout group sessions with keynote speakers and will aim to highlight the role that working equids play in human livelihoods and the role of veterinary science in supporting them. The event will be an essential forum for those who want to improve the welfare of the 100 million working horses, ponies, donkeys and mules around the world - as well as those seeking to improve livelihoods in communities that depend on them. With limited places available, spaces will be allocated on a first come, first served basis and online registration will close on 16th June 2014. Register now to ensure a place at this prestigious international event on working equid welfare and its human links. World Horse Welfare is offering 15 bursaries as part of its 2014 International Colloquium Bursary Scheme. The bursary scheme is open to any person who can justify to World Horse Welfare that they have something to offer to the subject matter – the charity would like to encourage working equid or human development practitioners, but would not restrict applications to these sectors. The bursary scheme offers awards of up to £2,000 which includes return travel, four nights en-suite accommodation at Royal Holloway, the two day conference package, practical workshop, all meals and internet and gym access. Simply complete an online form with your contact details, tell the charity about your area of work in brief and reasons why you should receive a bursary and before you know it, you could be coming to The 7th International Colloquium on Working Equids. Successful bursary applicants will be expected to attend the full Colloquium and provide follow-up case studies, short reports or photographs to World Horse Welfare to show the work undertaken to improve the welfare of equids overseas. World Horse Welfare would also like to provide opportunities to UK undergraduate veterinary students to attend the Colloquium and have created 10 bursary places for UK-based veterinary students. Bursaries will cover delegate costs to attend the event as long as successful applicants can meet their own travel costs. To find out more about the bursary scheme for UK students, contact your veterinary faculty. Could your work benefit from key discussions with leading organisations who know the industry well? Could your knowledge or studies help World Horse Welfare to better establish the link between the welfare of working horses and those that depend on them? If you think you could offer something to this important debate but don’t have the funds to get here, you could be eligible for one of these bursaries. Head of Programme Development at World Horse Welfare, Karen O'Malley says: "Bursaries are not just limited to overseas, but are available to anyone working in equine welfare or human development. We would like to encourage people to visit the website to find out more about the event. Having full participation in the colloquium will ensure that we do the best we can for the 100 million working horses and their owners around the world."
