Thyronorms? Liquid Formula Wins The Hearts Of Cat Owners With Easy To Give Award

Thyronorm® Oral Solution for Cats, the only liquid therapy for the long-term management of feline hyperthyroidism, has won the International Cat Care (ICC) Easy to Give Award, underlining the contribution it is making to feline welfare.

The treatment, which was launched last year by Norbrook, is revolutionising the compliance levels of hyperthyroidism in cats.

Veterinary Director at ICC, Dr Andy Sparkes, says the purpose of the Easy to Give Awards is to acknowledge, encourage and improve therapeutic compliance.

“The awards recognise prescription-only veterinary medicines that make administering treatments to cats genuinely easier,” says Dr Sparkes.

“Thyronorm was tested by a panel of more than 50 owners and veterinary surgeons treating cats with hyperthyroidism, and was awarded the Easy to Give recognition for its palatability and usability.

“The Easy to Give Award is presented after a formal evaluation of products by a panel of veterinary surgeons appointed by International Cat Care, together with their cat-owning clients.”

Feline hyperthyroid specialist, Dr Sarah Caney, says hyperthyroidism can affect a cat’s behaviour, making them irritable, anxious, and difficult to medicate – and this award recognises what a breakthrough Thyronorm is.

“Cats are often a challenge to dose with owners battling with traditional tablet form medication, so the feedback is that a treatment that is popular with cats, and is easily accepted, such as Thyronorm, is ultimately making owners’ lives easier.”

Dr Caney says hyperthyroid cats needing a low dose, or an ‘in between’ dose of standard tablet medication, are also benefiting from Thyronorm as the volume of liquid prescribed can be adjusted to provide cats with the exact dose they need.

“Thyronorm can be titrated ‘to effect’ – meaning the dose of treatment can be varied to suit the individual cat,” adds Dr Caney.

Companion Animal Senior Product Manager at Norbrook Laboratories, Dr Rachel Crowe, accepted the annual award during a ceremony at The Roof Gardens in Kensington, London.

“Norbrook is delighted to receive the Easy to Give Award for Thyronorm. This is the third product manufactured by Norbrook to achieve this accolade, with Loxicom Oral Suspension for cats winning the award in 2015 and Noroclav Chewable Tablets winning it in 2016.

“To make thiamazole, a very unpalatable and difficult-to-administer active ingredient, in a form that is readily acceptable to a hyperthyroid cat, over the long term, is testimony to Norbrook’s excellence in the formulation of companion animal products.

“We are absolutely delighted to have won the award for Thyronorm, and to know that owners of hyperthyroid cats can maintain the bond with their pet by using such an easy-to-give formulation, is the icing on the cake.”

Thyronorm contains 5mg/ml of thiamazole (methimazole), a tried and trusted active ingredient in a novel formulation, proven to have in-vivo bioequivalence to thiamazole-containing tablets. The initial starting dose is 5mg active ingredient per day, split into two doses and made simple with a clearly marked dosing syringe.

Available in 30ml and 100ml bottles, with an in-use shelf life of six months, Thyronorm provides the simple solution to stabilisation of hyperthyroid cats prior to surgery or radioiodine therapy and the answer for those owners wishing to continue treating with medication for the long term. Thyronorm is available to order from all UK veterinary wholesalers.
