For the vets that progress through their clinical career into roles where they are regularly placed in business decision making scenarios, the traditionally clinical rather than business focus of veterinary education can pose a problem. For this reason, the Veterinary Practice Management Association (VPMA) and the Society of Practising Veterinary Surgeons (SPVS) have joined forces to provide a congress that employs the expertise of eminent individuals who are not necessarily originally from within the veterinary industry. By sharing their words of wisdom, the speakers hope to help strengthen the veterinary business skills of the congress delegates. The grass root challenges faced by veterinary practice businesses are no different to many other industries. By inviting speakers from a wide range of backgrounds, but who all have an acute appreciation of the important novelties of a veterinary business, a lecture programme has been developed that is as wide ranging as it is practical and relevant. The full congress programme and speaker information can be found at www.vetmanagement.co.uk. Karen Felsted started her career in general accounting and management consultancy, before undertaking her veterinary training and eventually striking out on her own as Felsted Veterinary Consultants Inc, providing business advice to veterinary practices. Karen’s employment history provides a unique mix of skills that positioned her as the perfect person to develop and present the ‘Practice Health and Finance’ and the ‘Practice Development and Strategy’ lecture streams. With plenty of experience as an advisor to and treasurer of various eminent financial boards, Karen’s award winning continuing education pedigree will make sure the advice she gives is bang on the money. Based in America, her on-going dialogue with UK experts in the veterinary finance market means that the Atlantic Ocean certainly won’t get in the way of her talks being UK specific and relevant either. Sharon Wesselby started her career gaining degrees in Microbiology with Biochemistry and Law. Possessing that rare mix of scientific logic and a deep appreciation of how people ‘work’, Sharon started her company, Alternative Angles, more than 10 years ago. With experience providing fresh perspectives for organisations facing daily commercial challenges from their markets, people or portfolios, Sharon has based her ‘Personal Development’ lecture stream around a simple mantra; “You can’t change people, you can only change how you respond to them”. She believes that by analysing the knee-jerk patterns of behavior in the non-judgmental and open-minded forum that congress offers, she can help vets and veterinary managers take back control and effect change more easily. Helen Frewin is a business psychologist, who not only uses the insight of her education to get results from people, but also more than ten years of experience that she has gained advising businesses on how to get the best out of their people. Using this invaluable pool of personal resources, Helen is sure to always offer advice that is practical and challenges the norm to enhance performance. Her ‘People Performance Management’ lecture stream will give delegates the benefit of her real-life stories, guaranteed to resonate much more than textbook examples. Registration for the remaining few places at the veterinary business and management congress is still open. To gain some top quality CPD via lectures delivered by these three experts, masterclasses hosted by industry professionals and much more, visit www.vetmanagement.co.uk, e-mail [email protected] or phone 01727 859259. The Congress is sponsored by Norbrook and Citation plc (platinum sponsors), Pfizer Animal Health (gold sponsor), Merial Animal Health, (silver sponsor) and bronze sponsors Purina, Novartis Animal Health, The Practice Business Pet Health Plans, St Francis Group, Veterinary Insurance Agency, Pet Cremation Services, Rickerby’s Solicitors, Careline4Vets, Henry Schein Animal Health and Bayer Animal Health.
