The winner, Alison Pilgrim, with her design The winner, Alison Pilgrim, with her design Students at Moulton College, Northants, have just completed a project to ‘design a small animal veterinary practice.’ The design brief was part of the BTEC Extended Diploma course and was completed by 139 students at the College. Eleven designs were shortlisted and judged by an independent veterinary surgeon. Prizes in the form of gift vouchers have been provided by Virbac Animal Health. Mrs Isobel Richards MRCVS, Lecturer in Animal Management at Moulton College, explains: “The two year BTEC qualification is equivalent to three A-levels, with many of our students going on to university, for example to study veterinary nursing or pursue other careers in animal- related work. Students have been working on their designs since September and the creativity and imagination shown in their responses was impressive. While creativity was important, the designs were also judged on their practicality in the ‘real world.’ Our judge selected Alison Pilgrim as the winner and she wins £75 in vouchers. She was particularly impressed with the practical design of the consulting rooms, with front and rear doors allowing a single dispensary area for the whole practice. She felt Alison’s design was also well presented, using a computer and colour coding, and gave careful consideration to disabled access arrangements. The second prize winners were Danielle Harrison and Emily Phelan who submitted a joint entry, with Destiny Merrington in third place. They receive £25 each in vouchers.” Isobel Richards continued: “We’re grateful to Virbac for supporting this project. Moulton College puts a strong emphasis on building links with industry because we know it is beneficial for students and that it will ultimately increase their employability.” Chris Geddes MRCVS, Senior Product Manager at Virbac, said: “Supporting the veterinary profession and related animal management professions is one of our founding principles, so we we’re delighted to recognise the achievements of these students. How wonderful it would be if we could all work in a practice of our own design!” Founded by a veterinary surgeon, Virbac is the largest independent veterinary pharmaceutical company in the world and is dedicated to supporting the veterinary profession through the development of innovative products and services, which support their businesses and help animals lead longer, healthier lives.
